Professor Eric Donny

The ASPIRE 2025 Research Centre is delighted to welcome international researcher, Professor Eric Donny, from the Wake Forest School of Medicine in North Carolina, USA for this webinar presentation.

Please note registrations close at midnight, Wednesday 24 March.

Our webinars address questions that should be of particular interest to people in the public health and smokefree sectors, and others interested in public health policy.

In our first 2021 webinar, Professor Donny will discuss recent research on very low nicotine content cigarettes and the possible contribution to achieving the Smokefree 2025 goal of a mandated policy to remove most or all of the nicotine from cigarettes.

OVERVIEW

One of the proposed interventions for achieving the rapid and equitable reductions in smoking prevalence required to achieve the Smokefree 2025 goal is to require that all or nearly all the nicotine is removed from smoked tobacco products. This could prompt and support smokers to quit and reduce smoking uptake by young people by making cigarettes less ‘satisfying’ and addictive. In the USA the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed introducing such a law and has commissioned research to assess its likely feasibility and impact. Professor Donny’s presentation will describe some of the key emerging research findings, including from studies he has led, and explore the advantages and disadvantages of a mandated denicotinised cigarette policy as a measure to help achieve the Smokefree 2025 goal.

There will be an opportunity for discussion of the implications for the forthcoming action plan for achieving Smokefree 2025.
