The ASPIRE2025 Research Centre welcomes Chris Bostic, Policy Director, ASH US and Deborah Sy, Head of Global Public Policy and Strategy of the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC), Thammasat University, Thailand for this webinar presentation.
Overview
New Zealand is embarking on the final phase of consideration of its historic Action Plan to end the tobacco epidemic. Given both the enormity of the impact to its revenue and the apparent likelihood that other countries will follow, it is assumed that the tobacco industry will do everything possible to block, delay or alter this legislation. This presentation will examine Article 5.3 (industry interference) of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and the formal Implementation Guidelines, how they have been implemented globally, and how they might be used to minimize the industry’s impact in New Zealand, particularly given the country’s laudable efforts toward inclusion and transparency.
Speakers
Deborah Sy. As a global health lawyer with a background in economics, Deborah provides technical assistance on health promotion, good governance, product regulation, tax and development financing, illicit trade, as well as international trade and investment.
Chris Bostic is ASH’s Policy Director, and has been working in global tobacco control since 2001 when he attended the negotiations for the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control as a civil society international law expert.
