Although many young people begin vaping socially, addiction often follows quickly and the pleasurable experience they initially controlled, becomes a controlling phenomenon that reduces their wellbeing. This webinar explores the movement from casual experimentation to addiction and outlines the impact addiction to vaping has on young people’s mental health. It also explores how they view a tobacco-free generation policy that would encompass vaping products as well as smoked tobacco. Despite tobacco companies’ claims such a policy would reduce young people’s freedoms, most participants supported this measure, which they thought would help them quit vaping. Many wanted measures that would assert future generations’ right to protection from aggressive vape marketing.
This webinar is presented by Janet Hoek. Janet is co-Director of ASPIRE Aotearoa and has led several studies in vaping among young people. She serves on several NGO and government advisory groups, has provided evidence to government and Select Committees, and was a member of Australian government expert advisory groups overseeing plain packaging policies.
