This study was carried out by fourth year medical students at the University of Otago, Wellington under the supervision of ASPIRE2025 researchers, Nick Wilson and George Thomson.
The primary aim of the study was to investigate the presence and extent of environmental influences on alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking in central business district (CBD) and suburban streets within the Wellington region. A second aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of on-site field observation with virtual observation using Google Street View, and the final aim was to provide recommendations for interventions around tobacco and alcohol control in New Zealand.
