Smokefree Oceania Conference Gateway - Indigenous/Pacific Tobacco Control

Update 9 September – Following very high demand, registrations for this gateway event have now closed.  There are two other gateway events on offer, which you can read about here: http://www.smokefreeoceania.org.nz/page/262/gateway_meetings

Tala Pasifika is one of ASPIRE2025’s founding member organisations, and Director Stephanie Erick is helping coordinate one of the 2013 Smokefree Oceania Conference Gateway sessions, with Skye Kimura-Paul, Zoe Hawke, Sue Taylor, and Pele Bennett.  This gateway will focus on Indigenous and Pacific Tobacco Control, a vitally important topic for the sector.

Programme detail is still to be confirmed. Participants can expect key note speakers, workshops, and an opportunity to discuss the key steps to lower prevalence and reduce smoking initiation amongst our indigenous and pacific communities. Networking with key stakeholders will also be part of the day.

This gateway session will:

  • Lend support to individuals and groups working in the field of tobacco control.
  • Bring together key indigenous and pacific stakeholders to workshop and present on the impact tobacco has on our communities.
  • Discuss and develop key steps to address inequalities and indigenous/pacific participation in future Oceania Conferences.
  • Help grow a network for the sharing of information and resources in this field.
